Announcing Lavendar Graduation and the PSU Pride Awards

 

For decades students at colleges and universities around the country have been celebrating both their academic achievements and their cultural heritages at specialized commencement events.  These events provide a sense of community for minority students, and for many students they are the payoff for staying in school, and friends and families find the smaller ceremonies both meaningful and personal.

Lavender Graduation is a celebration that recognizes LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer) and straight-ally students of all backgrounds, and acknowledges their struggles, successes, and contributions to the university community.  Part of this celebration involves the granting of “Pride Awards” to recognize outstanding student achievement and contributions to the community.

Each year, the Queer Resource Center and the Sexual and Gender Equality Task Force will identify 10 outstanding graduating students to be the recipient of the Pride Awards.  Nominations will be sought from across the campus community, and all qualified students will be encouraged to apply.  A SAGE sub-committee will review applications and identify the award recipients.

The winning applicants will meet the following criteria:

  • A minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Must be classified as a student and graduating in the 2008-2009 school year
  • Graduating from an undergraduate or graduate degree program at PSU
  • Self-identify as LGBTQ or as being a straight ally
  • Distinction in one of the following areas, with priority given to students who exemplify all three:
    • Involvement in GLTBQ-related Activism
    • Service to the Community
    • Academic Excellence

To nominate a student, please email their name and email address toAlex Crossfield at alexc@pdx.edu with “Pride Award Nominee” in the
subject line. Students can also self-nominate. Applications for the Pride Awards are due April 20th.

The winners will be recognized at the PSU Lavender Graduation Ceremony on May 29, 2009, and be presented with a special stole to wear at commencement to acknowledge their accomplishments.
